ಕೆರೆಕರೆ -ಟಿ. ಶಿವಕುಮಾರ್ ಆಂಧ್ರಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಕಂಭಂಕೆರೆ ಹೊರತುಪಡಿಸಿದರೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಎರಡನೇ ಅತಿದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೆರೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಗ್ಗಳಿಕೆ ಇರುವುದು ದಾವಣಗೆರೆ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆ ಚನ್ನಗಿರಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಸೂಳೆಕೆರೆಗೆ. ಇದು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನದ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ. ಹಿರೇಹಳ್ಳಕ್ಕೆ ಎರಡು ಗುಡ್ಡಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಒಂದು ಬೃಹತ್ ಒಡ್ಡು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಹಾಕಿ ನೀರು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿರುವ ಆ ಕೆರೆಯ ಸುತ್ತಳತೆ 65 ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್. ಅದರ ಅಚ್ಚುಕಟ್ಟು ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಎರಡು ಸಾವಿರ ಹೆಕ್ಟೇರ್. ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ವಿಸ್ತಾರದ ಕೆರೆ ನೋಡುಗರ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಸಾಗರದಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ. ಎರಡು ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಸುಮಾರು 950 ಅಡಿ ಉದ್ದದ ಏರಿ. ಏರಿಯ ಅಗಲ ಒಂದೆಡೆ 60 ಅಡಿಗಳಾದರೆ, ಇನ್ನೊಂದೆಡೆ 80 ಅಡಿಗಳಷ್ಟಿದೆ. ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಕೆರೆಯ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಅಚ್ಚರಿಯ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವು ಇತಿಹಾಸಕ್ತರಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಗೆ ಆಕರಗಳನ್ನು ಒದಗಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗವತಿ ಎಂಬ ಪಟ್ಟಣ ಇತ್ತೆಂಬ ಐತಿಹ್ಯ. ವಿಕ್ರಮರಾಯನೆಂಬ ರಾಜ ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ, ನೂತನಾದೇವಿ ಆತನ ಪತ್ನಿ. ಈ ದಂಪತಿಗೆ ಶಾಂತಲಾದೇವಿ (ಶಾಂತಮ್ಮ) ಎಂಬ ಒಬ್ಬಳೇ ಮಗಳು. ಅವಳು ಯವ್ವನಾವಸ್ಥೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ತಂದೆಯ ಅನುಮತಿ ಪಡೆಯದೆ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತ ನೆರೆಯ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅರಮನೆಗೆ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆಕೆಯ ನಡವಳಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ತಂದೆ ವಿಕ್ರಮರಾಯ ಆಕ್ಷೇ
