U S AWARD

Indian-American human rights activist Mallika Dutt has won the American Courage Award for her work in the U.S. and India. The 47- year-old, who grew up in Kolkata and left for the U.S. at the age of 18 , will receive the award on October 1 from the Asian American Justice Center, a leading civil rights organisation. In 1989 , Ms. Dutt co- founded 'Sakhi,' an organisation that helped south Asian women suffering domestic violence in New York. According to Ms. Dutt, the award highlights the need for effective immigration reform in a post-9 /11 America. "Right now people can be detained and deported for very minor reasons. There has to be a fair and sensible way for people to enter this country." As a human rights officer for Ford Foundation in New Delhi, she addressed the rights of the marginalised — Dalits, adivasis and women. She considers abuse of women as the most serious form of human rights violation in India. She heads ' Breakthrough

ARIHANT SUBMARINE

Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur launched India's first nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant , becoming only the sixth country in the world to do so. The 6000 tonne INS Arihant submarine is powered by an 85 megawatt capacity nuclear reactor and can acquire surface speeds of 22 to 28 kmph (12-15 knots) and submerged speed upto 44 kmph (24 knots). It has the capacity to carry a staff of 100 men and will be armed with torpedoes and missiles including 12 ballistic missiles.

THE DASARA

festivities were 1st started by the Vijayanagar Kings in 15 th Century. After the fall of Vijayanagar Kingdom, continude by Raj Wodeyar in 1610.The Wodeyar's of Mysore continued the Dasara Festival by, Raja Wodeyar I ( 1578-1617 CE) in the year 1610. The Navaratri festivities, continued uninterrupted even between 1761 and 1799 , when Hyder Ali and later Tippu Sultan ruled Mysore. When the kingdom was handed over by the British to Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1799 , the capital was shifted to Mysore and Navaratri was celebrated with even greater magnificence.
